What a local move inside Boise costs

Per moveBuddha's July 2026 Boise cost data, tracked movers average $100 per hour with a typical two-hour minimum of $200. Local moves inside Boise are billed by the hour, and Freightwaves Checkpoint's May 2026 Boise page lands on the same $100 per hour and adds a line most estimates omit: a standard base fee of about $229 may apply.

Statewide, moveBuddha (accessed August 2026) puts the Idaho average at $108 per hour for a two-person crew.

Read the two columns separately. moveBuddha publishes ranges; Freightwaves publishes point averages. And in its August 2026 national cost guide, moveBuddha prices crews at $100-$150 per hour for 2 movers, $150-$270 for 3, $180-$320 for 3-4, $200-$400 for 4 and $250-$500 for 4-5. Those crew rates cover the national market for crew plus truck, so use them to sanity-check a bid and use the table above for what Boise itself charges.

Moving from Boise to Salt Lake City, Portland, Seattle or Denver

Per moveBuddha route pages updated July 30, 2026, the full-service floor climbs with distance: $2,477 at 339 miles, $2,864 at 430, $2,920 at 504 and $3,430 at 814. Once the truck crosses a state line the hourly clock stops. moveBuddha, accessed August 2026, prices those moves on shipment weight and total mileage instead. Figures below are for a 2-3 bedroom household.

Whole-route spans run wider than the 2-3 bedroom band because they stretch from a DIY truck up to a five-bedroom haul: $418 to $9,480 to Salt Lake City, $675 to $11,522 to Denver. The Denver lane quotes transit at 2 to 7 days door to door.

Season, weight and the surcharges underneath

Per moveBuddha's April 2026 peak-season analysis, more than 60% of moves happen between May and September, and costs jump 20%-30% in peak months. Weight and distance set the base on any interstate move; season sets the multiplier.

Boise sits inside that squeeze. On the 2025 U-Haul Growth Index, Idaho ranked the No. 8 growth state, Boise the No. 12 growth metro, up from No. 17 in 2024, and Meridian the No. 11 growth city. The index tracks one-way U-Haul equipment traffic, so read it as a proxy for where people are heading rather than a headcount of them.

Surcharges stack on top of the base. Fuel surcharges on long-distance moves typically add 8%-15% to transportation charges, and stairs, elevators, long carries and shuttle service each add $75-$500 or more. moveBuddha, accessed August 2026, puts packing labor at $0.15-$0.21 per pound and shuttle service at $0.08-$0.12 per pound with minimums starting around $200.

Coverage is the line people skip. Default released-value protection pays $0.60 per pound, a formula that tracks weight and ignores what an item is worth. Full valuation coverage costs 1%-2% of declared shipment value, roughly $300-$600 on a $30,000 shipment, and only 27% of Boise movers offer it.

Renting a truck yourself versus hiring a crew

U-Haul's published in-town rates are $19.95 per day for the 10-foot truck, $29.95 for the 15-foot, $39.95 for the 20-foot and $49.95 for the 26-foot, each plus mileage and fees. That rate card was last updated December 15, 2025.

The daily rate is only the opening line of the bill. U-Haul's own example, a one-day rental in Dallas, Texas with an estimated 30 miles, runs $29.95 per day plus a $1 environmental fee and $1.19 per mile, totaling $69.75 with tax. Advertised rates exclude mileage, fuel and optional damage coverage.

Across home sizes, DIY truck rentals for a move within Boise run $149-$1,335, per moveBuddha's July 2026 Boise data. Set that against $242-$515 for a studio or one-bedroom with a hired crew, or $1,232-$2,173 for three to four bedrooms. The rental buys a truck, not labor.

Timing and tipping

Per moveBuddha's April 2026 analysis, January and February are typically the cheapest months to move, and the busiest dates are June 30, July 31 and August 1. Tuesdays through Thursdays are less busy than weekends, and the 10th-20th is usually less hectic than the beginning or end of the month.

On tips, moveBuddha suggests $20-$30 per mover for a half-day move of four hours or less and $40-$60 per mover for a full day of eight hours or more, or $5-$10 per hour per mover. By share of the bill it suggests 5-10% for standard service and 15-20% for outstanding or complex moves. That guidance is dated July 2025 and reads as etiquette advice, with no measured Boise pricing behind it.

Who regulates a Boise moving company

Idaho does not require household goods operating authority for intrastate movers. The legislature removed the Public Utilities Commission from motor carrier regulation in 1998: House Bill 697 repealed Chapter 8, Title 61, Idaho Code, and placed insurance verification and safety inspection with the Idaho Transportation Department. The repeal stuck: Title 61 carries no motor carrier chapter today, and the Chapter 8 slot now holds the Stray Current and Voltage Remediation Act, Idaho Code §§ 61-801 through 61-809.

None of that leaves the trade unwatched. Federal USDOT registration, safety inspection and ITD insurance filings still apply. What it means in practice is that there is no state household-goods license to look up, and a moving dispute does not escalate to the Idaho PUC.

For interstate moves the backstop is federal. Under 49 CFR § 375.405(b)(8), a mover may not collect more than 110 percent of the original non-binding estimate at destination. That rule covers a Boise-to-Denver move and stops at the state line, so a Boise-to-Nampa job has no equivalent federal cap.
